We all used the word low tide & high tide in our lifetime. Even we enjoy this natural phenomenon. In other views it sometimes very useful. So what are they and what is the difference between them? Let’s discuss in detail here on this website RingStudy.
Low Tide: “At the coast, low tide is the time when the sea is at its lowest level.”
High Tide: “At the coast, high tide is the time when the sea is at its highest level.”
When & how many times it occurs?
It happens 4 times a day which includes 2 high tides and 2 low tides. Because the Earth rotates through two tidal “bulges” every lunar day, coastal areas experience two high and two low tides every 24 hours and 50 minutes. High tides occur 12 hours and 25 minutes apart. It takes six hours and 12.5 minutes for the water at the shore to go from high to low, or from low to high.
Now the question arises that how it works and why it works? To understand this we need to understand the gravity of earth.

Gravity is the force of attraction towards the center of the earth. Due to axial rotation of the earth, there is a force in the effect which tries to throw the bodies on the surface outside the earth. This force is known as the centrifugal force. We can understand the centrifugal force by the example of making a clay pot. We use axial rapid motion which spreads the clay but we apply the hand to the surface to give them shape by not allowing the certain surface to spread. The gravity pulls the other bodies towards the center of the earth. That’s why when we jump we immediately fell on the ground or earth. This gravity force is familiar with the name weight.
How Gravity is responsible for it?
This happens due to the force of attraction of the Sun and the Moon. The Sun and the Moon both attract the bodies on the earth’s surface towards them. Only liquid can be easily be affected by that force hence only water is affected. When the Moon and the Sun both come on the same side of a particular geographical location then the force of attraction is more which lead to the high tide and when they go less on the other side then attraction is which leads to the high tide but with lesser than the previous one. The other two positions where there is neither Sun nor Moon have the opposite phenomenon which is low tide.

Do low and high tide affect the sea only?
No. It affects oceans as well as rivers, lakes, ponds, and any water bodies. But the increase in the water level so less that we did not recognize it. The tide in the river is clearly visible. So we can say more the volume of water more the tide.
